Willard Gleeson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Willard Lafayette Gleeson was born in 1897 on a small family farm in Lancaster County, Texas. His first job was in a phone switching center for AT&T that sparked his lifelong love of electronic engineering. Willard moved his family to California and settled in the Oakland area and took a job as a salesman for radio station KROW. In the early 1930‚ Willard founded his own advertising agency and raised enough money to start his own radio station, KPRO, which he built in Riverside and later added radio stations in Indio, Blythe, and Brawley. He sold his stations to Dick Clark Productions in 1957 and retired. In the early 1970‚ Willard purchased a small radio station in Calexico, KICO, and ran it until he died in 1990 at the age of 92. His wife of 51 years, Mary Florence Love Gleeson died two years later. Two of their 5 children attended Riverside City College. This scholarship will be awarded to a continuing or transfer Riverside City College student with a career goal in broadcasting or journalism with financial need.
